Letters to a Missionary in Canada - 1950

Last night I flipped a coin.  Actually, I flipped a Mardi Gras doubloon that was sitting next to my keyboard.  If it came up the Bacchus head then my post this week would be an autobiography Grandpa wrote.  If it was the parade theme (backside of the doubloon) then I would post some letters Grandpa Cash sent to Grandpa while he was on his mission in Canada.  The parade theme (Love is in the Air) won.  So I will insert two of the twelve letters Grandpa Cash sent......."sent" being the operative word.  Notice that I didn't write "letters that Grandpa Cash wrote."  Why.....because he did not write them.  Rather, he dictated them to his secretary, she typed them, he signed them and she mailed them after he put a check inside the envelope.

The first letter mentions that Grandpa bought a car on his mission.  Either that was a blatant violation of mission rules or things were different in the mission field in 1950.  Probably the latter.  Grandpa Cash's trip to Mexico with his second wife Virginia and her two children, Carolyn and Marsha, is pretty interesting.

This second letter gives some insight into why Grandma was always a little intimidated by Grandpa Cash.  Seems that he was not too thrilled about Grandpa and Grandma planning their wedding while Grandpa was still on his mission.  She used to talk about visiting Grandpa Cash in his office at Walker Bank on her lunch break when she worked at Aurbachs (a department store in downtown Salt Lake City) and shaking the whole time.

I have ten more letters.  If you would like me to post more of them, please let me know in the comments section (I believe you have to register to make comments.)  Here are some pictures of Grandpa on his mission.....couldn't find any of the car.

The missionary to the left of Grandpa is his cousin, Henry Cameron...can missioaries wear bowties today?

What color do you think that suit is?

This must have been before he bought the car

A cold day

Next week will be the autobiography.
